Gynecomastia surgery basically involves two procedures namely, liposuction technique and excision technique. The first removes the stubborn chest fat. The second technique is about removal of glandular tissues inside the breast. Subsequently excess skin is removed and in some cases reduction of areola and re-positioning the nipple too is done. Let us read about the gynecomastia surgery in detail.
Pre-surgery – Before Gynecomastia Surgery
Your cosmetic surgeon who is going to perform gynecomastia surgery on you would advise you to stop any medications you are under. As a matter of fact if the medications you are taking are for any serious illness, then your cosmetic surgeon would ideally want you to undergo the procedure after the medication cycle for any such illness is over. The cosmetic surgeon would study your medical condition and only then give a go ahead for the surgery.
After the cosmetic surgeon has found you fit to undergo male breast removal surgery, you would be asked to stop all medication for a period of two weeks. Because some of the medications you are taking may interfere in the healing process and hence the precaution.
During Male Breast Removal Surgery or Gynecomastia Surgery
The patient is first administered anaesthesia. In most cases general anaesthesia is administered. The man boob removal surgery is termed as “Reduction Mammoplasty” in medical terms. The cosmetic surgeon determines if the gynecomastia surgery requires just liposuction of the chest area or both liposuction and excision of the glandular tissues inside the chest.
Liposuction in Gynecomastia Surgery
The procedure is pretty similar to all other liposuction technique. A canula fitted with a tube to one side and vacuum to the other is inserted inside the chest area and moved back and forth by the cosmetic surgeon. This process loosens the excess fat in the chest area and drains out through the tube.
Excision Technique in Gynecomastia Surgery
In this technique a small hole is made near the circumference of the areola and the glandular tissues inside the breast are removed. In some cases, the nipple might be in unfavourable positions and they might require repositioning. During the excision technique the repositioning of nipple to the favourable position is also accomplished.
After Man Boobs Removal Surgery or Gynecomastia Surgery
The cosmetic surgeon would cover the surgical wounds and would prescribe you necessary medications for healing. Dr Kalanidhi of Dr Kalas Clinic, a Cosmetic surgery clinic in Chennai performing gynecomastia surgery, tells that the full extent of the result would be visible only after complete healing which might take anytime between six to ten weeks. Dr Kalanidhi also says that it is advisable not to hit the gym immediately after a man boob removal surgery. He recommends waiting for recovery time. Once the recovery period is over, if the patient feels okay to lift weights, he can carry on. Dr. Kalanidhi is of the opinion that post recovery it is the individual’s ability and resolve that matters most.
